During adolescence, we turn away from everything we once admired as children, only to long for it again in adulthood. What makes everything we once admired about a mother turn into shame? The daughter in our story confesses that, during her teenage years, she felt shame and rejection towards the way her mother, who had a disability, behaved in front of her friends. Only after losing her does she realise that her mother, the mother at the heart of our story, was special, unique and wonderful. Her role model.
